If you’ve been researching abortion after learning you’re unexpectedly pregnant, you’ve likely come across online abortion pills and may be wondering if they are safe.

While the internet can make the abortion pill sound simple, it is a medical procedure that needs careful consideration before making a decision. One of these considerations is a medical screening beforehand to protect your health.

The Acadiana Pregnancy Center & Clinic provides free pregnancy testing and ultrasounds to help you understand how your pregnancy is developing. We are here to give you accurate, confidential information about abortion and your other options so you can make an informed decision about your next steps.

The FDA Warns Against Ordering the Abortion Pill Online

The FDA advises against purchasing the abortion pill from online or unverified sources. This is because you won’t know whether the pills are safe, properly dosed, or correctly manufactured.

There is also a lack of follow-up medical care, and complications such as heavy bleeding, infection, or incomplete abortion may go unnoticed without medical support.

Why a Medical Screening Matters

A pregnancy test alone only confirms the presence of the pregnancy hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). It does not provide information about how your pregnancy is developing.

An ultrasound can confirm how far along you are, whether the pregnancy is viable, and where the pregnancy is located.

This information is essential for protecting your health. For example, the abortion pill is FDA-approved through 10 weeks of gestation. Accurate dating is important, especially if your cycles are irregular.

In around 2% of pregnancies, the pregnancy can implant outside the uterus, known as an ectopic pregnancy. This is a medical emergency and cannot be treated with the abortion pill. An ultrasound can also help determine if a miscarriage has already occurred, as it is still possible to receive a positive pregnancy test after a miscarriage due to remaining hCG levels in the body.
