A woman considering an abortion

When abortion is on your mind, it can be tempting to move quickly. But this is a decision that deserves more than a rushed answer. Taking time to understand the process, the risks, and your other options can make all the difference.

At the Acadiana Pregnancy Center & Clinic, our medical professionals are here to provide free, confidential pregnancy testing, ultrasounds following a positive test result, and options counseling so you can move forward with clarity. We also offer referrals to local community resources, including prenatal care providers, Medicaid assistance, WIC, and more, so you have support that extends well beyond your appointment.

Two Different Methods

There are two distinct methods, and which one applies to your pregnancy depends primarily on how far along the pregnancy is and your health history, both of which cannot be determined without an ultrasound.

A medical abortion (the abortion pill) involves a two-drug regimen and is generally offered earlier in gestation. A surgical abortion is a procedure performed in a clinical setting and is done further along. Each method involves different physical experiences, recovery timelines, and risks.

This is also why an ultrasound is so important before any decision is made. Beyond confirming gestational age, an ultrasound reveals the location of the pregnancy and whether the pregnancy is progressing. If a miscarriage has already occurred or if the pregnancy is ectopic, the situation requires a different kind of medical attention entirely, and abortion would not be applicable.

The Emotional Side Is Worth Considering

Abortion is not only a physical experience, but the emotional response that follows can be just as significant. Some women feel relief, while others find themselves processing feelings of sadness, grief, or regret, sometimes long after the procedure itself.

Research suggests that women who feel pressured into a decision, have a desire to continue the pregnancy, or have existing mental health concerns may be more likely to experience emotional difficulty afterward. Taking time to reflect on how you truly feel, rather than making a decision under pressure or urgency, is always worth considering.

If you have already had an abortion and are navigating difficult emotions, you are not alone. The Acadiana Pregnancy Center & Clinic works alongside trusted community partners to help connect you with the counseling and support resources you deserve.
