If you’re sexually active but want to avoid pregnancy, it’s crucial to know when you’re least likely to get pregnant.

While some days in your cycle carry a much lower chance of conception, it’s important to remember that no method (except abstinence) is 100% effective in preventing pregnancy. That’s why understanding how your body works, and learning to track your cycle can help you make informed decisions.

When You Are Least Likely

If your menstrual cycle is regular, the least likely time to get pregnant is typically during your period, usually from day 1 to day 7. During this time, your body is shedding the uterine lining, making it harder for pregnancy to occur.

If you have an irregular cycle, it’s trickier to pinpoint your less fertile days. Tracking your cycle and figuring out when you ovulate can give you a clearer picture.

When You Are Most Likely

The highest chance of getting pregnant is during your fertile window, which happens around ovulation. Ovulation is when an egg is released and ready to be fertilized.

For most women, ovulation occurs about 14 days before their next period starts. The fertile window is about six days long—five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. This is because sperm can survive up to five days, and the egg is available for fertilization for about 24 hours.

Having unprotected sex during this time makes pregnancy more likely.

How Can You Track Your Cycle?

To know when you’re ovulating, try these methods:

  • Check your cervical mucus: It gets clearer, stretchier, and more slippery during ovulation.
  • Use an ovulation kit: These kits detect hormonal changes that signal ovulation.
  • Track your basal body temperature: It rises slightly when you ovulate. A special thermometer can help you track it.
